Marketing: the ad and the sale are moving into the AI chat
Marketing's paid channels are turning into conversations: as of August 2026, the ad a customer clicks and the place they buy are both moving inside an AI chat the business does not own. OpenAI is testing an ad that opens a branded ChatGPT conversation instead of a landing page, and Meta's new agent can answer questions and close a sale inside a WhatsApp thread. The craft a small agency sold, running the ad account and building the pages a customer lands on, is being folded into the assistant.
What's changed since we last looked
When Era Haus last looked at this field in ad platforms opened campaigns to outside AI agents, the shift was that the big platforms let an outside assistant read and adjust a live campaign. Six weeks on, the ad itself is becoming the agent.
In early August 2026, Search Engine Land reported that OpenAI is testing a new campaign type it calls Agent. Instead of sending a click to your website, the ad drops the customer into a branded ChatGPT conversation that OpenAI builds by crawling your site for common questions and product details. For now it is a limited test. The direction is plain enough. The landing page, the enquiry form and the first sales chat, the work a marketer used to design and bill for, get replaced by a conversation on OpenAI's surface.
The storefront moves into the chat
The same shift reached the place much of the world already shops. On 1 July 2026 Meta opened its Business Agent platform to any company, after announcing it in June (Meta, June 2026). The agent runs inside WhatsApp and Meta's other apps, answers a customer's questions, checks stock, and walks them through checkout without a person involved. Meta says more than a million businesses are already using it.
This lands harder outside the United States than inside it. In much of Latin America, India and Indonesia, WhatsApp is already where customers and shops talk, so an agent that can close a sale in that thread sits on an existing habit rather than a new one. A small retailer in São Paulo or Guadalajara can now put an AI clerk on the channel its customers use all day. The US reaches that point later; a large part of the world is there now.
To be in the answer, you have to be in its data
The other half of the story, how customers find you, moved too. On 23 July 2026 Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings and photos to OpenAI, so ChatGPT now shows that data inside its local answers and offers a button to contact a business directly (Axios, July 2026). Being recommended inside the AI's reply increasingly depends on the data the AI is allowed to read about you. A thin or missing business profile now shows up as a hole in what the assistant tells a customer.
That reach is worth taking seriously, because the customers who arrive this way buy. In the US, Adobe found shoppers arriving from AI assistants converted about 42% better than other traffic in early 2026, while AI-referred visits to retail sites climbed steeply over the year (Adobe Analytics, 2026). The volume is still small next to ordinary search, but it is the fastest-growing, highest-intent channel most businesses have.
What it means for you
For a small marketing team or agency, the funnel you used to build is being compressed into a conversation you do not own. The ad that once landed on your client's website now opens a chat on OpenAI's app. The sale that once closed on the site now closes in a WhatsApp thread run by Meta's agent. And whether the AI recommends your client at all depends on data held by the review sites and platforms, not on the website you optimised.
That points to where the value actually sits, and it is the case Era Haus made in defensibility in the AI era: when the channel and the tooling become cheap and rented, worth moves to what does not copy. In marketing that is a clear point of view, first-hand data or reviews the AI has to cite, and a direct line to the customer that does not run through someone else's conversation. The agency that only set up ad accounts and built landing pages is exposed. The one that owns the brand's story and its customer relationships keeps its value.
What to do about it
Three grounded moves. First, check what the assistants actually say about your client. Ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers the questions a customer would, and see who gets named and what is cited. If the reviews and business details are thin or wrong, fixing them, on the review sites and your own clearly written pages, is now how you earn a place in the answer.
Second, treat the new conversation ads and shopping agents as experiments to run rather than accounts to hand over. Put a small, capped budget through an agent-conversation ad or a WhatsApp agent, and keep a person checking what it tells customers and what it promises. An agent speaking for your brand can get the facts, the price or the tone wrong, and it does so in public.
Third, if any of your ads use AI-made images or video for customers in Europe, label them. The EU's AI Act now requires AI-generated ad content to be marked as artificial, in force since 2 August 2026, with real fines behind it. Building that habit now is cheaper than retrofitting it later.
What to watch rather than act on yet: letting an agent run the whole path from ad to sale with no one checking. The pieces are in place on the big platforms, but they are new, the benchmarks are thin, and every conversation happens somewhere you do not control. Test on a small scale, measure against your other channels, and keep the customer relationship your own.
The pattern underneath
The shape running through this series holds again: AI gets cheap inside the tools a business already uses, the routine craft is automated, and value moves to judgment and relationships that do not copy. Marketing's version is the sharpest, because AI is now doing the work and becoming the place where finding, deciding and buying all happen. The team using these tools to run the old campaigns faster gets the small win. The one that makes its brand the answer a customer trusts, and keeps that customer's relationship its own, is working on the advantage that lasts.
